Common Holiday Plumbing Problems

The holidays are coming! And with the all the joy comes its fair share of holiday plumbing problems. They don’t stop just because it is the holidays, and sometimes they are even escalated by all the guests in the house. While your guests are over, that means more traffic for your plumbing. Here are just a few common holiday plumbing problems to be aware of this holiday season.

Toilet Overused

The toilets are used more frequently with guests over, so the likelihood of holiday plumbing problems has just gone up. You may notice that it is constantly running, which could be one of several things going on in the tank of your toilet. Same thing if the toilet will not flush, which is a nightmare when you have guests over. A plumber will be able to get to the root of your problem. Another common incident that is never fun during the holidays, is a clogged toilet. Sometimes it can be fixed with a trusty plunger, but if it is really bad, an emergency visit from a plumber is always an option.

Clogged Sinks

With extra people around the house, more stuff is likely going down the drain, and the holiday plumbing problems ensue. Whether it is food or hair, your chances of a clogged sink have increased! The holiday season is usually cause for more cooking and baking than usual. This can take a toll! If you find that the water in your sink is not draining, you can try to snake it and buy some drain cleaner to help. If that does not take care of the problem, you may need a plumber with some heavy-duty tools.

Sewer Problems

One of the worst-case scenarios is the dreaded sewer system backup. A drain cleaning before the holidays is a good idea if you are anticipating a lot of guests at once. If you think tree roots may be in your sewer system, this is even more reason. Your guest bathrooms may not have been used in a while, it is a good idea to look before guests come. Also check if there is a sewer smell, you will want to run some water as your first solution. The traps have likely dried out, and the water needs to be replenished. These are things you want to take care of before they become holiday plumbing problems.

Not Enough Hot Water

And of course, not having enough hot water and constantly running appliances are holiday plumbing problems you likely thought of already. With all the extra showers, more laundry, and more dishes, standard hot water tanks may not have the capacity to keep up. Make sure to spread out the use of hot water throughout the day. Have a shower schedule that is spread out, and time your laundry loads accordingly! If your water heater fails, you will want to call a plumber to come out because some hot water is better than none.
