Signs it is Time to Replace your Kitchen Fixtures

The kitchen in your home probably gets a lot of traffic, so it is no surprise when things start failing and need replacing. Kitchen fixtures do not last forever, but what are a few signs that you should replace them. Some of the major plumbing elements in your kitchen include faucets, garbage disposals, and dishwashers. Have you noticed any of your kitchen fixtures looking a little worse for wear?

Faucets

There are a few ways to spot visually if your kitchen fixtures, like your faucet, need to be replaced. For example, if you see mineral build-up or rust. Mineral deposits will occur if you have hard water. They will build up and get worse over time. It appears as a white crust on the outside of the faucet. However, it also builds on the inside and can affect the water flow. Rust is another common indicator. It can be hard to move the components of your faucet when you have a rust problem. Rust will form on the inside before you notice it. By the time you do notice, it is usually around the base of the faucet. Leaks can also develop over time. Leaks can be fixed, but if they are reoccurring, you should probably replace the faucet.

Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal can wear down after a while. If it clogs more frequently, it could be the wrong size for your needs, or the blade could be dull. These kitchen fixtures are unique because of the blade components. With dull blades, the food you put in may take a long time to grind up. You may also notice that you must hit the reset button more frequently or a leak has developed. A leak can indicate a crack. In this case, you will need a new disposal. The disposal may also have developed an unusual noise recently. If you do not find anything odd in your garbage disposal that could be causing the sound you may want to have it looked at.

Dishwasher

There are several signs that your dishwasher may be at the end of its life that you should be aware of. Some obvious signs of your kitchen fixtures decaying include rust or cracks inside. These could cause damage to the rest of your kitchen’s flooring and cabinets from the leaks that developed out of rust and cracks. Just like your garbage disposal, you may notice some odd noises coming from your machine. Investigate the source, but if you cannot find what could be making the noise (like poorly loaded dishes,) call a professional who can repair or replace it for you. You could also have some issues with the components of your dishwasher, like broken latches. The dishwasher will not be able to run if the door does not lock, so you will have to fix it. Depending on the issue, you may be able to have someone fix it inexpensively, or it could be covered under warranty, but if it is an old machine, it may be a better investment to replace it.
